Azhar Rafiq, M.D. - Medical Operations Laboratory Director (Operations Branch)
Dr. Azhar Rafiq, Associate Professor in Department of Surgery, is the Chief Scientific Officer for the NASA Research Partnership within the Center Medical Informatics and Technology Applications Consortium (MITAC) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He graduated from St George's University School of Medicine in 1990 and joined the Department of Neurology at VCU. During his research fellowship, Dr Rafiq established a track record for innovative work in mechanism of Status Epilepticus and traumatic brain injury. His efforts established an in vitro model for Status Epilepticus with focus on neural pathway mechanisms. In 2001, Dr Rafiq joined Medical Informatics and Technology Applications Consortium (MITAC) as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery. Dr Rafiq completed his Executive MBA program at VCU in 2003 and was named Chief Scientific Officer for MITAC. Dr Rafiq has authored numerous manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts in the arena of telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, robotics in surgery, and integration of technology in medical education. For over 15 years Dr Rafiq has been involved in various aspects of the design, development, and implementation of clinical research to improve health care. He has worked to integrate technological advances into virtual reality and simulation training protocols for laparoscopic surgery and medical informatics for telemedicine. Dr. Rafiq has achieved success with clear vision for telemedicine, and integration of technology into the practice of medicine with creation of strategic visions and active management of team professionals.
